About

Composer David MacDonald writes music that is serious and clever, while embracing a fondness for groovy rhythms and delightful surprises. He simultaneously embraces and pokes fun at expectations, like smashing the formality of concert traditions through the irreverent firehose of Twitter.

Growing up as a trumpet player in St. Louis, Missouri, David attended the University of Missouri, first focusing on performance and only then discovering an interest in composition. He later earned a M.M. and D.M.A. in composition from Michigan State University. His primary composition teachers have been Ricardo Lorenz, W. Thomas McKenney, and Stefan Freund. His music has been heard at concert venues around the world, including Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall.

David believes passionately that new music, even pretty weird music, is for everyone, not just the formally trained few, and he loves sharing new music experiences with a wider audience. In 2010, he co-founded SoundNotionTV, a podcast network featuring audio and video shows about music and the arts. He previously served as founder co-Artistic Director of SCENE&heard, a new music concert series at the (SCENE) Metrospace gallery in East Lansing, Michigan.

Today, David lives in Orlando, Florida, where he teaches music composition at the University of Central Florida. He is president of the Central Florida Composers Forum and Director of Digital Media for the Timucua Arts Foundation.

Alternative bio

David once won an award. It was a very prestigious award. You would be impressed. He also holds degrees. So many degrees. The best degrees from the most beautiful institutions. People say his music is nice. He tends to agree with those people, and disagree with several others who do not like his music.

In addition to making music, David likes to make other things. Such things that dreams are made of. Very geeky and curious dreams. He made this site that you’re reading right now. This one. Unless somebody copied this text onto another site, in which case the previous sentiment would be untrue.

He holds jobs. Some of them are the paying sort. You would be so impressed by the titles he has at those jobs because you’re very reasonable and the titles are very impressive.
